I get the feeling that when Whitney Houston passes we'll all be singing “I believe the children are our future” at the top of our lungs like we're doing with all the Michael hits, but do we really believe that??? Certainly if we did there'd be more stories like that of Khadijah Williams who despite touring the LA shelter circuit more than MJ toured the Pop curcuit is on her way to Harvard University this Fall. Khadijah's mother had her when she was only 14, and because of the subsequent instability has placed her daughter in 12 different schools in the last 12 years.
The brilliant Brooklyn-born student learned early on that beyond the pimps, prostitutes and drug dealers that surrounded her on the street, there were mentors, counselors and positive adults to be found at school. My concern is that where that support system isn't present there aren't Khadijahs. I have my own teen named Khadijah, who like her namesake is an aspiring lawyer. Despite her own harrowing story, she will be headed to the black Harvard, Howard University this fall and her mother, extended family and community are all so proud of her. My hope is that upon hearing these types of stories, some of you guys will look out a little bit more for your little cousins, friends and even your friend's little cousins. You'll finally have a chance to put that story about getting so drunk you woke up in a tree to good use. And who knows, you might be a square of the patchwork that is another Khadijah. Khadijah(s), we salute you!!!

Khadijah was interviewed this week for an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show entitled “Don't Stop Believing.” It is scheduled to air on Friday, October 2. Watch for Oprah's surprise for Khadijah!
