Lifted from an oft-parodied 2004 German film called “Downfall,” the three-and-a-half-minute YouTube clip expertly synchs expletive-laced subtitles to the lip movements of the actors, principally the lunatic Hitler, played by the Wim Wenders favorite Bruno Ganz in an unintentionally comic turn worthy of Mel Brooks. Haunted by his failure as a painter, the fuming dictator predicts a dire future for a Deitch-led MOCA deluged by skateboarders and graffiti artists like Shepherd Fairey and Barry McGee, whom Deitch has championed.

In a critical event, MOCA Cleveland is currently playing host to the first ever public survey of contemporary African American art in the Ohio region. From Then To Now: Masterworks Of Contemporary African American Art. The exhibition features 27 artists, and begins with signature pieces by such pioneering figures of the 1970s and 1980s as Romare Bearden or Alma Thomas, and continues up to the present with prime examples of works by artists such as Lenardo Drew, Alison Saar, Willie Cole, David Hammons, Lorna Simpson, Carrie Mae Weems, René Green, Kara Walker and Kehinde Wiley, among others. Addressing a range of themes and issues, the exhibition presents an overview of the rich cultural heritage voiced by contemporary African-American artists in their examination of history, identity, and memory.

Tonight's telethon was definitely one for the books. George Clooney seemed to have pulled everyone currently working in Hollywood on one stage. Subsequently there were many memorable performances. This post isn't about all of them though, just my Top 5 because I'm tersely narcissistic. The 5th spot would go to John Legend, because his rendition of "Motherless Child" was nothing short of legendary. The 4th spot would be filled three ways by Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow and my dude Keith Urban because their take on "Lean on me" was soulful and moving. The 3rd spot would have to be occupied by Justin Timberlake and his man Matt Morris, because their Cohen Cover was downright flawless.

The 2nd spot goes inarguably to Mary J Blige, who was the only performer of the night to bring me to tears. But as much as I love Mary, how in the world could I place anyone besides Haiti's native son Wyclef in the top spot??? Not only did he perform a song from one of my favorite flicks, "The Harder they Come", but he broke it down into some Haitian carnival music. There were other great performances, but if you enjoy live instrumentation and musicianship, you'll probably prefer these as well. To see my top 5 as well as all the other great performances of the night click here and be sure to visit HopeforHaiti.org to give to this worthy cause.
